Should Prednisone Be Withdrawn After Couple Of Years Of Usage?
I was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica about 7 years ago and was given Predinsone as treatment. I have taken 3 mg. daily for 7 years and am trying to get off it. My body aches all over. Should I continue with my medication or continue to get off of it and hurt all over. I am an active 85 year old woman. rb

Prednisole is one of the antiinflamatory drug used for autoimmune inflammatory conditions. One of them is polymylgia rhematica where there will be auto immune inflammation in your muscles. So this tablet is really needed for prevention of this. At the same time due to long term use there Are lot many side effects also like early osteoporosis, thin skin, visual problem, memory loss, body pain, nausea, weakness of muscles, increase sugar level.etc. Now to answer your question if you want to stop this then take suggestion from your neuro and reduce dosage very gradually at the same time take any simple alternative tablet with good omega 3 diet. Here omega 3 also have anti inflammatory effect so that it will protect you from polymylgia rhematica. Take care.
