Should Antibiotics Be Given To An Infant With High Fever, Pain In Throat And Reduced Appetite?

Hello dr. My son is 5mnths old.he startd gettng high fever since yest early morning we took him to a paediatrician,he prescribed calpol every six hrs 0.6ml n mucolite 10 drops thrice a day since he also had bad throat. he mentiond if fever is still high,to start with ibugesic. 2.5l thrice n watch 48hrs. if fever continues to stay then to stat with zedocef atibiotic. i startd ibugesic yest aftrnoon itself since the fever wasstill high. But he has had only 2ounces of milk since today morning n crying bitterly. m worried,shud i start with theantibiotic right away,.i think he is getting a bad throat oain coz everytie he tks a sip of milk he starts crying bitterly.

Hi,

You can talk to your treating doctor again.



He was correct in asking you to wait for 48 hers because most of the fevers are viral.


However if the child is not able to feed go to the doctor again because it may be strep throat .


Your doctor can reexamine the child and also assess for dehydration and general condition.
