Should Extra Protection Be Used With An Expired Mirena IUD Insert?
Hello, I have had the Mirena IUD in for 5 yrs now. The clinic gave me a card saying that it should expire in June of 2014 so a few months prior to last June I had contacted the Clinic but was told that it was not actually necessary as it does really expire until Sepempter of 2014. Well of course I had forgotten to re-contact clinic and have not have it removed? I received a letter the other day from the clinic saying that the Mirena had expired, Of Course, June 2014?? I am going to call and leave a Voicemail now at the clinic even if they are closed because I ll forget otherwise but what are my chances of getting pregnant with an expired Mirena IUD in and should I be using protection until I get in?? I currently have not used any protection and don t really have an normal periods anymore anyways but recently had light bleeding but periods have been few and far between?
I suggest you not to use expired Mirena IUD. You should go for a new Mirena IUD.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Minera IUD is a hormonal devise having long effect. Once it surpasses expiry, the hormones are withdrawn and ovulation can set in. In such a condition, if extra protection is not used, the possibility of pregnancy remains, which can be manifested by scanty bleeding.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
