Should I Meet Doctor For Swollen, Dark Blue And Cold Finger After Smashing Thumb?

Hi! My husband smashed his thumb today while cutting wood. He cannot bend it, it is swollen, dark blue and cold. He doesn't think the doctor will do anything so he won't go to the doctor. What damage do you think is done and should he go to the doctor?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Swollen, dark blue and cold finger after an injury is highly suggestive of a vascular compromise (decreased/absent blood supply) to the involved finger. It is a medical emergency and you need to rush to the Emergency room for further evaluation and management.

If the vascularity is not regained to the soft tissues within a few hours, then there is every chance for the injured area for becoming non-viable and may result in gangrene.

So, I am of the opinion that your husband needs immediate medical attention.

Hope this information is helpful. Good luck
