I fell on a concrete pavement and a severe abrasion. The skin was taken off and is red,saw and painful. I m applying gentamicin sulfate and had applied mupirocin. It. Doesn t get better. Can this lead to necrotizing fasciitis, the flesh eating disease?

Hi,

Healing of wounds, especially those of the severe type usually takes some time to heal. There can be several factors which can also affect the time of healing, like the presence of infections and deeper wounds, both of which prolongs the healing. The presence of infection in wounds usually show redness and swelling on the surrounding tissue (which can extend in a few days), and the presence of pus on the affected tissues. If these characteristics are present in your wound, I would highly recommend a check-up with your doctor. This may require testing of the pus for culture and sensitivity for appropriate antibiotic treatment, as well as the possibility of debridement depending on the extent of the infection, if there are any, to facilitate proper wound healing.

Not all wounds lead to necrotizing fasciitis, but it would depend on the extent/severity, as well as the bacteria which has colonized the area. So I would still recommend a check-up for proper treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
