Skipped Taking Doxycycline As Part Of Anti Malaria Treatment, Itching When Exposed To Sun, Antihistamines

My husband had to take doxycycline as part of anti malaria treatment when working in Papua New Guinea. He has been off it for just over 18. Months and still experiences severe itching when his skin is exposed to the sun and has to take antihistamines, is there any thing he can do ? He covers up when he is outside but is getting tired of taking antihistamines.

1. although ADR [adverse drug reaction] of doxycycline is photo sensitivity, but as 1 and half year has gone and was skipped thus could be due to remaining drug in the blood [tetracycline have direct toxic effect on the skin] or some other cause is there for itching.
2. If it is still continuing, it may result in thickening and scarring of the skin
Consult your Dermatologist for any Allergic reaction or other causes of photo sensitivity/dermatitis.
3. In the mean time try following mentioned guidelines:
. Limit sun exposure, especially between 11:00 AM to 4 PM, or if outdoor activity is important, use PABA free sunscreens that protect against UVA and have a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 - 50.
. Recent studies suggest that antioxidants, especially beta-carotene, may help lessen the symptoms.
4. Most photosensitivity reactions go away eventually and cause no permanent harm. However, symptoms can be serious when there is an underlying disease or when the exposure has been severe, YOU should keep track of the frequency and duration of symptoms. This information can help determine appropriate treatment by your Doctor.
