Small Child, Loose Watery Stools, Teething. Taken Rotarix Vaccination. Treatment Options?

Hi, my 8 month old baby is having diarrhea . she passed very loose and watery stool about 6 times since morining. She is teething now. For the past 2 days she was having gas problem so consulted doctor and giving her Neopeptine. From today morning she is having loose motion. Please advise on the food to give my baby now. I am afraid of dehydration . We have given her Rotarix vaccination 2 doses at 2.5 and 3.5 months. Please advise.

Hi

In this age group, most common cause of diarrhea is viral, and mostly rota virus. Rotavirus vaccine prevents severe forms of such diarrhea. How ever there are some more viruses too that can cause diarrhea.
Teething is not known to cause loose stools in this frequency of 6 times a day.
What ever be the cause, you should be worried of dehydration part as you already are aware of.

To prevent dehydration,
- continue breast feeds
- give him lot of fluids like porridge made of rice/ sago etc, vegetable soups, dal water, plain water and ORS.
- give him rice based food, mashed potato and lot of curd.
Curd is very good during diarrhea as it has probiotic bacteria naturally. Do not be under false impression that it causes cold.
- Avoid fruit juices/ formula milk/ cow`s milk.

Be sure he passes urine atleast 4 times in a 12 hour period.
If he has vomiting also, you may need to give him medications like Domperidone syrups.

If at any time he becomes tired/ passes very less urine/ food intake is less/ activity is less, do not hesitate to take him to the doctor.

Hope my answer helps you.
Wish a speedy recovery for your kid.

Hello,
Rotarix vaccine - Prevent only Rota virus induce diarrhea , But there are lot of virus which do not have vaccine.

Acute watery diarrhea is a self limiting condition, lasting less than week.

In Diarrhea important thing is watch for Dehydration Sign. (low urine out put, sunken eyes, Absent tear less, drowsiness, Lethargic, Abdominal distention, Restlessness etc)

Pediatric opinion:
If your child dehydrate.
Stool with blood
Stool with mucus(White sticky discharge)
High Grade fever.

I would advice:
keep her/ him Hydrate. Is most important condition in diarrhea
1.Give plenty of water(1/2 liter water+ 4 tsf sugar+ 1/2 tsf salt) Or ORS
2.Apple juice, Tea, Pomegranate juice, Coconut water, lemon water Butter milk, Rice Kanjee, Arrowroot Kanjee etc
3. Proper hygiene.
4 Avoid out side food.
5. Exclusively Breast feed.

Thanks :
