Small Child, Sleeping A Lot, Gaining Weight. Thyroid Test Positive. Cure?
My daughter is just 8 yrs old. she has been gaining weight and sleeps a lot. we got her tested for thyroid . the report has confirmed the same. we are shocked ! At such a tender age she is having thyroid. what is the treatment for the same. we are told that it is a life long disorder. it can only be control but can not be cured completely.
hi. from your description, i assume your daughter is sufferring from hypothyroidism (decreased thyroid gland activity) which could be because of many different reasons. the treatment is thryroid hormone replacement which your pediatrician should be able to initiate and monitor regularly. although your child will need to take the medication lifelong, she will be able to lead a long happy life with its help. good luck. dr. lahoti.

Hello,
Welcome to HealthcareMagic forum.
Please do not panic . Yes , congenital hypothyroidism is a disorder which starts at birth and needs life long treatment . It's not a curable problem but can be effectively controlled with daily medications .
Please do start treatment as early as possible for better brain and physical development of the child . I would recommend consulting an endocrinologist for the same .
Wishing your child good health.
Regards
