Some Of 91% Rubbing Alcohol In The Eyes Causing Discomfort. Remedy?
My child put some 91% rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball to wipe make up off of her eye and some of it wicked into her eyes. They were flushed with water for fifteen minutes and the immediate pain went away. It has been twenty four hours and she is still feeling some discomfort off and on. My question is, will eye drops help the eyes heal by moisturinzing the eyes with the drops?
Alcohol burns to the cornea will resolve without long term damage so long as they are mild as sounds to be the case here. I would use artificial tears for the next week 4-6 times/daily to lubricate the ocular surface as it recovers. During this time leave contacts out. See an ophthalmologist if not better in the next few days.
Your child has probably developed toxic keratoconjuctivitis due to chemical (alcohol in your case) that went in your child's eye. The keratoconjunctivitis that develops is a very acute reaction with onset mechanisms starts as soon as the eye comes in contact with the chemicals. Washing her eyes was first good thing that was done, this usually removed most of the chemical sticking to the eye surface thus decreasing the intensity of reaction. the discomfort your child now have is due to the body response to chemical that is still present in her eyes. it ususally clears of with in a couple of days. You can use lubricating eye drops like refresh tears 6 to 8 times a day, and chewable tablet vitamin -C to promote healing. In case the discomfort persists it is always wise to consult an ophthalmologist in your region and follow his/her instructions. Take Care
