Hello Leesa
Thanks for your question
Depression and
anxiety disorders are very common disorders in present times. Depression in youngsters manifest usually in form of low mood, poor self confidence, decreased energy, lack of interest in any activity.
Most of the times it is also associated with symptoms of anxiety like
increased heart rate, sweating, tremors etc. With time somatic symptoms like physical pain,
poor appetite are also observed.
Depressed individuals usually have different opinion towards self, world and future. They usually see negative in self or consider worthless, negative view towards world like i am helpless, negative views to future like hopelessness. So we have to give special attention to a depressed individual. We should accept depression like any other medical disease, as most of the people even today ignore psychiatric illnesses.
But the good thing is that treatment is available and its very effective. Both medical and psychological treatment are available and combination of treatment is very effective. Medical treatment like he is already taking usually includes drug groups like SSRIs (
Fluoxetine,
Paroxetine, Escitalopram) or many other drugs.
Non medicinal treatment includes
cognitive therapy mainly. Proper support to depressed person and motivation enhancement sessions, modeling etc. are must. Try to encourage him to spend at least 1-2 hours per day in leisure activity and physical activity. Exercise will be beneficial as it releases endorphins which increases confidence and well being.
Group sessions are also one option with very good results.
He will be alright just have faith in treatment. Don't leave treatment without advise of doctor.
