Sore Throat, Tiredness, Body Ache, Fever, Mosquito Bites, Difficulty Swallowing. Strep Test Done. West Nile Virus?

Hi I need advice. I am worried I could possibly have West Nile Virus . I have a sore throat , I m more tired than usual although I am getting adequate amounts of sleep. Also, my body aches I am really upset because I can t exercise. I have a fever of about 100-101 degrees Fahrenheit . I do have many mosquito bites and I live in a partially wooded/swampy area. My swollen glands are enormous and it is hard to swallow. I went to a clinic today and all they said was that my strep throat test was negative. Please help me.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Lets first discuss about West Nile fever. West Nile virus (WNV) is most commonly transmitted to humans by mosquitoes.. There are no medications to treat or vaccines to prevent WNV infection. Fortunately, most people infected with WNV will have no symptoms. About 1 in 5 people who are infected will develop a fever with other symptoms. Less than 1% of infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, neurologic illness.

So its very rare that you are having this fever and even you have the treatment remains symptomatic. So advise to take antibiotics for any secondary infection. Take paracetamol 500mg TDS to reduce the fever and also feel bodyache can add Ibuprofen on it. Try to maintain proper fluid balance in your body. For sore throat do the warm saline gargles. And you can reduce your risk of being infected with WNV by using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing to prevent mosquito bites.
