Staph Infection On Leg, Getting Worse After Taking Sulfamethoxazole And Amoxicillin. Reason?

I have a bad skin/staph infection on my leg. Went to the doctor and he prescribed two
prescriptions.....Sulfamethoxazole and Amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium tablets....
I started taking the prescription as prescribed on Saturday. The infection only seems to be getting worse and spreading. How long should it take to have a positive response. .??

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Since you are a known case of staphylococcal infection / skin infection .
Sulfa methoxazole + amoxy+clavulanic tablets are not effective .
However these medicines are most potent drugs so reason may be else.
1 May be carbuncle , diagnosis can be confirmed by biopsy of this wound ( as this is a single wound so precaution is very important ) . Blood sugar level is also important .
An increasing number of cases are now caused by methicillin- resistant strains of streptococcus pyogenes & staphylococcus aureus . The antibiotics as you used may ineffective due to resistance , so only option is parental antibiotics , so consult a dermatologist and get his opinion after culture & sensitivity test.
2 Diabetic non-healing ulcer , diagnosis can be confirmed by all tests for diabetes.
3 Blood supply may impeded so go for vascular study.
So consult a dermatologist and get his opinion as most potent antibiotics failed.
Good luck. Dr. HET

hello dear,
thanks for your query at HCM,
staphyloccus is one of the most dangerous and resistant organism.
its infection will take time to decrease. a course of 5 day antibiotics are minimum to control its infection.
wait for the response of the antibiotics to come,
if still infection is spreading and high fever, you have to change antibiotic according to sensitivity of the organism
