Sudden Behavioral Change. On Medication For Bipolar Disorder. Anything To Be Done?

Hi,
I am the Mum of a very special daughter who lives many miles away in Australia. Whilst I was visiting in Feb, she was committed to a clinic and diagnosed with bi-polar. I am so devasted as she will not allow me to help or even speak to me. She seems to think I favour my other two children. This is far from the truth as we have always had such a super relationship. She will not reply to my texts or emails and I feel as if she has died. Is this a normal reaction for someone with bi-polar. To turn against the people who love you most. If so why? My daughter is 48 in June and has had periods of depression during her life but never like this.

Hello,
welcome to Healthcare Magic.

In Bipolar disorder patient has both manic and depression episode. It is a chronic illness. This illness occur due to neurotransmitters imbalance in brain.

In depression most common symptoms are: low mood, decrease energy and negative thinking. In contrast, in Manic episode common symptoms are: over cheerfulness, anger, irritability, increase energy and decrease need for sleep. Patient may have some psychotic symptoms (like Fear, suspiciousness, muttering to self, unusual and odd thinking) which can occur with depression or mania.

As she already had depressive episodes in past, and current behavior is totally new for you, then it appear that she currently have manic episode +/- psychotic symptoms.

It is better you make some arrangement for supervised treatment for her, as she is living far from you. There is also need to check compliance for treatment.

Wish you good health and all the best.

Regards,
