Sudden Elbow Pain, Swelling, Diagnosed As Bursitis. History Of MRSA In Opposite Elbow. Cure?

Hi, I recently felt a pain in my elbow as if I had banged it on something. I don t recall any incident damaging my elbow prior to today. A severe pain has set in since the early after noon and now my elbow is swollen to the size of a baseball. Given my past experience in having MRSA two years ago in my opposite elbow this concerns me. I visited a walk-in clinic today and the doctor there gave an early diagnosis as bursitis . I also did blood work and am awaiting the results. I plan on getting a second opinion tomorrow and see if I can be given antibiotics .

Hai,

Thanks for writing in,

If there is no fever and if your not a diabetic or valvular disease patient then you won't need antibiotics.

Just apply a crepe bandage around elbow to decrease the swelling. If pain is more, elbow can be immobilised in a POP splint for 2 weeks till the swelling subsides. Keep your elbow elevated with support in an arm sling. Avoid activities in the elbow.

Cold fomentation in the form of ice can be given at the site which will help in decreasing your pain and swelling.

If there is any abnormality in your blood tests like altered coagulation profile or elevated uric acid levels, you will need medications to control them. An Xray of your elbow will help us rule-out any bony injury.

A course of NSAIDs will decreasing pain and swelling.

Get well soon.
Regards.
