Sudden Needle Type Pain On Knee Cap. What Could Be Reason?

Sudden pain, needle type pain at the touch on knee cap. Looks as though there is a swollen vein across my knee cap. Tingling tight pain when I bend it. Vein area is deep purple in color. 5 9 160lbs runner, physical shape. Came on all the sudden, standing in my kitchen.
