Sueggest Treatment For Swelling In Legs

My mother (83yrs old), has swelling in both her legs. She stays in bed most of the day and the swelling still does not go down. What can be done about this swelling? She takes prandin, amaryl, diazide, hydrochlozine, potassium, gabapintine, alpruinal, and warfine. She is 5'3" and weighs about 230lbs. She does not eat much at all, but eats mostly carbs.
She is very stubborn, and I cannot go thru losing her (I lost my eldest sister in March from renal failure). Please help me get her help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Sir/madam,

Thank you for your query at healthcaremagic.com

It looks like she has edema in legs. Edema is a normal response of the body to inflammation or injury. In the leg it due to a fluid accumulation which could be due to inactivity. In this state tthe body is unable to pump the fluid back up towards the heart.
I would like to advice you to put 2 pillows under her legs such that it is above heart level i.e 45 degrees. In this position she can be encouraged to do ankle toe movements which will enhance the blood circulation and also the pumping of fluids.
Encourage her to walk with walking aid.
Encourage her to socialize and talk to people that will boost her confidence and well being.
It is very important that she does general body exercises with assistance.

She can consult urologist, they might advice her to take anti diuretics and protein rich diet.

I hope i have answered you query. Please revert back if you would like to know any further information.

With best wishes,
Dr. Krupa G(MBBS)
