Suffering From Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 5, High Level Of Urea. Suggested Transplant. Medicine Which Can Reduce Urea Level?

Hi I would request a Nephrologist to reply me.My brother age 38 has been suffering from chronic kidney disease stage V and is on dialysis for the last 20 months. Urea reaches to 200 and creatinine about 9 with hypertension hardly manageable. Since his kidney transplantation is delayed due to shortage of funds, I would like to know about some medicine which can change urea in to a useful substance or at least in to less dangerous to health. Kndly help me. Sareer Khan

Hi and thanks for the query,

I am afraid with a stage 5 kidney disease, seeking medical treatment would not do any good. It might be preferable to sacrifice and get the kidney transplant. I understand its too demanding, but that s the best option under these circumstances. Saying for now there exists a drug that could reverse the situation or reduce urea levels would be grossly false. Kidney dialysis is a procedure however that helps as you wait to get the transplant done.

Thanks and kind regards,

Bain LE, MD.

Hi,I genuinely support your attempt to lessen the problems your brother may be going through. Please try & understand that your brother is already on dialysis & has been advised to undergo renal transplantation.
Such a decision is taken when it is certain that kidney function is not going to recover .At that juncture absolute levels of urea /creatinine just tell us about various aspects of body functions including muscle mass.Higher the muscle mass more is creatinine.Infact you should not worry much about the levels but maintain good muscle mass for your brother.
I reassure you that just by maintaining him on dialysis & giving him high quality proteins in diet will help him the most.
Best of luck
