Suffering From Excessive And Foul Uncontrolled Flatulence. Had Ulcerated Colitis Treated With Prilosec, Carfate. Solution ?

Hi, I'm 59 year old female in menopause and had gastric bypass 8 years ago.I've been really suffering from excessive and foul flatulence which I cannot control. It is horrible and embarrassing. I was 273 pounds and now I'm 201 and still wanting to lose the last 20 pounds. In the last six months I've had ulcerated colitis and was treated with Prilosec OTC and Carfate liquid which helped me to eat some. It got so bad all I was eating was broth, dry toast, herbal tea and mashed potatoes. Eventually I was able to move to a Mediterranean diet, limiting most meat - occasional chicken - and a little dairy, mostly cottage cheese and cheddar. I'm just really confuse about what to do about the gas and horrible smell. The gas is so loud you can hear it across the room and the smell rivals any skunk. Help!

Hello,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
From your query i understood that you are suffering from ulcerative colitis and foul smelled flatus.
Ulcerative colitis may be the cause for your Foul smelled flatus.
Because small and minor necrosis are always there in Ulcerative colitis.
This in turn lead to Putrefaction of the necrosed cells and tissues in intestine.
Putrefaction produces the Foul smelling gas.
This foul smelling gas explued as flatus.

In obesity, gut motility is slow. this also increases the Flatulence.

Some general advices are.
Drink plenty of water.
Consume high green vegetables and fruits.
Exercise regularly.
Avoid carbonated drinks .

Hope this helps. If any doubt, just reply.
Take care.

Hello,

Thanks for posting,

If gas started shortly after introducing a particular meal plan, then it is possible that the recent diet plan is responsible for the gas. Treatment of excess gas requires a multidisciplinary approach. First your doctor has to rule out possible gut infection and then reevaluate your ulcerative colitis to see if treatment is still effective (as it could still be responsible for your excess gas). Certain antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin could help fight off the infection.
Do see a physician for complete evaluation then you book appointment with dietician for proper diet plan.

Hope this helps
