Suffering From Schizophrenia, Attacked Family, Broke Household Items. Medications Not Helping. Treatment Options?
i have a friend who has schizophrenia and it seems hes been getting worse he has attacked his family and also random people twice. he also tried to use forks or knifes to fight like 2 times. he also has started to break household items like vases, microwave and making holes through walls. the medication doesnt seem to work what is the next step to helping him get better would it be the hospital?
Hello......
Thanks for your query. Schizophrenic patients lack insight i.e they do not acknowledge the fact that they are suffering from a mental illness. Hence, they are not compliant to medication either. The options are either in patient hospitalisation (even short term), use of depot antipsychotics and use of alternative formulations like suspension/sprinkle. The choice can be made after a thorough psychiatric evaluation.

your friend have paranoid schizophrenia and you probably know in this type people are suspicious among neighbour, relatives also on family member only this things can explain his all symptoms.
Now about the medication-to work or don't work that depend weather adequate dose for adequate time is applied or not or is there any combination of antipsychotics.I hope this all are done according to rule but he didn't response.this is called TREATMENT RESISTANT SCHIZOPHRENIA.
He need urgent hospitalization in a mental hospital to reduce physical, economical, familial loss he will do.Then consult a psychiatrist and follow his advise.in this case we psychiatrist divided into two .some prefer clozapine drugs and some prefer electroconvulsive therapy.booth are excellent for controlling violence.
Best wishes
