Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Your mom can consult bariatric surgeon for a suitable bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery gives dramatic results if you can observe certain precautions, which the surgeon will tell you. With weight loss she will feel better & if she can do little exercises(after surgery), other problems also will improve.
Wish her good health.

General & Family Physician Dr. Shekhar Deo's  Response
Hi, Welcome to HCM.

Based on the limited information you have given, it is quite difficult to advise on her condition. Looks like she has been having hypothyroidism (low thyroid gland functioning) due to increase in her weight. However, hyperphagia (excessive eating) goes in the direction of hyperthyroidism. Pertaining to her condition there are high possibilities of change in the dose of thyroid hormones that she must be taking or her thyroid gland has become over-active. If so that might explain her recent finding of osteoporosis (considering she is not post-menopausal).

Also Grave's disease is a type of hyperthyroidism that can cause the above mentioned symptoms and also swelling of the ankles and the legs (called as pretibial myxedema). Other causes of swelling at the ankles are; peripheral artery disease due to built up of atherosclerotic plaques in the lower extremities. These are usually painful. Last but not the least is heart failure. I will advise that you should have your mother examined immediately by a cardiologist to rule out any possibility of PAD (using ultrasound etc) and heart failure, in addition to the endocrinologist for her thyroid condition.

Hope this helps.
