Suggest An Alternative Of Morphine Sulfate For Backache

I am on morphine sulfate 15 mg ER. My Doctor offered oxymorphone 10 mg ER or Fentanyl patches 25 mcg/hr as alternatives. I have pain from an 8 level back fusion from an accident. The morphine causes tremors in my hands. Which alternative would be better for pain.

You must be very careful when it comes to long term narcotic usage. Opiates can cause serious complications, dependence and even death. Morphine and Oxymorphone are very good choices when it comes to acute pain from things like accidents, surgeries, etc. The benefit of switching to Fentanyl, is that it will get released into your system through your skin in a steady dose. Along with this, Fentanyl often has fewer side effects than other strong opiates like Morphine or Oxymorphone. Many patients have very good pain relief with a Fentanyl patch. 25mcg/hr is on the lower end so there is room in the future to increase the dosage by simply adding a patch or switching to a new patch.
