Suggest Complications With Swollen And Tender Ear Glands

My son has had a visibly swollen, tender gland behind/below his right ear for over 24 hours now. We are treating symptoms with ibuprofen. He has had MMR so it can t be mumps, right? When medicine starts to wear off he s pretty miserable, and had bright red cheeks this evening too. Otherwise, he s fine. At what point should we see a doctor?

Hi,

This is the time to rush to the doctor, preferably a pediatrician or an ENT surgeon. Whether mumps or not, you have to get a clinical evaluation. Tests of blood to see WBC count. High count means the antibiotic like Amoxicillin has to be started immediately. Continue Ibuprofen as per weight as low doses do not help. Additional symptomatic and supportive treatment helps a lot. Have plenty of oral fluids. Ultrasonography confirms whether this is salivary glands or lymph node mass and helps in any additional treatment. Continue the treatment till cured.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
