my husband had a colectomy 8 mos ago and we are still not what is correct to eat. H e has a lactose intolerance yet grilled cheese doe not affect him but pizza does. He can go for several dAYS with normal stools and then it converts back to watery with small pellets. Why does this happen? I appreciate any help you can offfer. thanks, sandi
Good Morning, I am so sorry that you did not receive the mandated nutritional counseling for managing your husbands diet after a colectomy.
First, cheese has very little lactose in it, but may range from 0% to 3%. If pizza bothers, don't eat it.
Probiotics may help the stool situation. Keep them refrigerated.
With colectomies, fiber is poorly tolerated and if given it should be soluble such as oats, oatmeal, cheerios with lactaid only milk.
You asked why his stools are irregular. There is no one answer. The obvious is he had a colectomy. The unanswered is if he is developing irritable bowel, but the obvious is it is his diet.
I highly suggest you visit a Dietitian and work out a plan for your husband so both of you can achieve quality of life. Regards, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
