Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Dosage For Vitamin D Supplements While Suffering From Osteopenia
My doctor has prescribed 50,000 IU once a week for Vit D. I was diagnosed with osteopedia. No back issues, but some hip loss from taking a bone density test. Also, 2 capsules of Citracal for calcium per day. What do you think about the dosage for Vit D?
I think I would agree with the dosage that has been mentioned. In case I was looking after a patient with your problem, in my OPD, I would have suggested the same. However, I would also have suggested testing Vitamin D levels prior to onset of therapy so as to know how long the dose may be needed.
Similarly, I would repeat the test after 6 doses of Vitamin D. Note, where I practice, the dose available is 60,000 Units, not 50,000 Units. But I think that may be a local pharmaceutical restriction. I have tried to make it as simple as possible.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
