Suggest Management After A Virus Attack Of The Heart

Greetings My Brother caught a virus, it manifested itself to attack his heart. he was in ICU for 10 days. They installed a defibrillator and sent him home. He is currently very week and its been almost a month with no follow ups from the hospital. He has no history of any other diseases or conditions. In fact a very fit person, lives a healthy lifestyle. His current prognoses has yet to be determined by the Cardio doctor. He only has the internet for advice. The EKG says 15% Question is can a once very healthy 55 year old male heart recoup? Is there any special heart foods he should be eating. Any activity he should or shouldn t be doing (he is still very weak and can only walk a couple blocks to a subway or taxi to get around the city. Any suggestions or comment greatly appreciated Doctor. Worried Brother

Cardiologist 's  Response
your brother seems to got viral cardiomyopathy and he probably was throwing arrythmias (abnormal fast heart rythms during which heart might not put out adequate blood, and body especially brain will suffer), hence he is implated with a cardioverter defibrillator. usually hearts with viral infections will recover fully in 2 to 3 months, in very rare cases it might take long and still rare will not recover, he will be weak during this recovery period as the dilated heart will not be pumping adequately to push out sufficient blood required by the body and his organs and muscles will be still suffering, it will gradually disappear with improvement of the heart, more over he had a viral infection, even his body requires time to recover. viral infections are usually self limiting and hence no special foods are required, u can give him multivitamins whic will help
