Suggest Management For Inguinal Hernia

My Husband has had an Umbilical Hernia for about 20 yrs. In the past few months He has had a lot of gas & explosive bowel movements. He gets up 3-4 times during the night as well. The protrusion has puffed up from his belly button about 0.5-1.0 inch & He is unable to push it back into his body like He used to. He doesn t have Insurance, so He has been procrastinating going to a Dr. Does this sound like My Husband should see a Dr. soon? He was told yrs. ago not to worry about it unless it hurts & it doesn t hurt. Thank You - E. Daly

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history about your husband having the umbilical hernia for about 20 years. He has lots of gas and explosive bowel movements, gets up 3-4 times in the night. The umbilical protrusion has puffed up and unable to push it back but still has no pain as was advised in past by a Doctor not to worry if there is no pain.
You have mentioned above about Inguinal hernia and described about the umbilical hernia.
Since there is no reduction of hernia, there is obstructed hernia without strangulation and hence no pain. It still warrants to explore and get the hernia reduced and repaired as this is foretelling the possible complications in the future.
His second problem is about gas and explosive bowel movements for the past few months. I would advise him the following in such a situation.
Get the stool tested for 3 consecutive days.
Get a course of an antibiotic, metronidazole, probiotic, activated charcoal table and see the results.
He may be alright in 5 days of the course.
If stool the problem persists, go for ultrasonography, tests of blood, CT scan and colonoscopy to see for the cause, get a proper diagnosis and treatment.
