Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had a laporoscopical hernia repair last Thurs, leaving surgery about 8pm est. I am 82 yr old female. I know I need a bowel movement but my colon is short from a section removed more than 3 years ago and I dont want to take a laxative. I have trouble more with diarrhea. How careful should I be with straining?
Ideally, one should never have to strain to have a bowel movement. Straining after a hernia surgery is not likely to hurt your GI tract any more than normal, but may cause your new surgical wounds to open up. Therefore, I would recommend not straining. If you are constipated, I would recommend a short course of laxatives with a goal of having one normal bowel movement per day.
