Hello, Dr. Grief. I am 64 years old and have multiple spine injuries, degenerative disc disease, spurs, etc. I have consulted a neurosurgeon in Nashville who told me to wait until I could not tolerate it any longer and then we would consider surgery. I also suffer from fibromyalgia, CFS, depression, anxiety attacks, GERD, hiatal hernia. I have had multiple fractures such as tib/fib, crushed ankles, both arms broken, etc due to car accident. I am in constant pain and seldom go out due to the pain and disabilities. MY QUESTION: I have sought out pain management doctors because my GP seldom prescribes pain meds due to regulations and the fact he is ready to retire. The pain management doctors look at their patients like they were criminals just there to get a fix. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I am a retired nursing home administrator and have never been a drug addict. I do take Lortab, 10 mg. TID. How do you find a good pain management Dr. who understands that I am truly in constant pain. I live in Western Kentucky near Paducah, so our choices are limited. The reviews of the pain management specialists around here are atrocious, such as uncaring, uncommunicative, 2 to 4 hour wait times, rudeness, etc. I would drive an hour or more if I could be assured that the Dr. was understanding and could work with me on getting my pain level to a point that I could function as normally as possible. Do you have any advice for me?
