Suggest Treatment For Shingles In My Eye

Good Evening Dr. Grief. I have had a severe case of Shingles in my eye for the last several weeks. My Primary Care Physician has been prescribing 7.25/325 lortab for pain and gabaptentin for the nerve pain. The gabapentin knocks me out. I feel like a zombie after I take it. The only thing that brings me any relief is the Lortab. I am prescribed up to 4 pills daily as needed. The symptoms of the shingles have pretty much gone away. However, I think I have developed Postherpetic neuralgia. The pain is really intense. Shingles runs in my family it seems. My Aunt is on Fentanyl patches for her outbreaks. I feel guilty asking for a high dosage of the Lortab. That is the only thing that seems to keep the pain at bay. What do you think? Thanks for your opinion. Have a great night.

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Hello
It seems from the history that you are having severe shingles. Shingles is because of reactivation of chicken pox and is called as herpes zoster ophthalmicus. The treatment in the acute phase is by using antivrals and antiinflammatory drugs.
Post herptic neuralgia is a common complication of herpes zoster ophthalmicus infection.
The treatment is by using pain killers, topical capsaicin application or by application of topical anesthetic agents like lignocaine, Antidepressants like Amitryptline or Antiepileptic drugs like Gabapentin, Carbamazepine.

Hence I advice you to consult your doctor for prescription of drugs.

Thank you
