Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father is almost 90 and has a fever of 100, with a sore throat and stuffy nose. Probably just viral but I'm not sure what is best for him to take to bring the fever down. He's on several medications and I know he cannot take ibuprofen. Would Tylenol be best?
What your father is suffering from may indeed be viral or maybe bacterial ( in whic case, he'll need an antibiotic course).
He may be given paracetamol which is a potent analgesic as well as an anti-pyretic. It will reduce his fever. I'd strongly advice you to do Cold Tepid sponging. Take a cloth, dip it in cold water and apply the cloth to entire body. Doing this will almost immediately bring the temperature down and will also give him relief. Do this as soon as he start developing fever. For stuffy nose, he may be given a nasal decongestant.(Otrivin).
I'd also advice him to do warm saline gargles atleast 3-4 times a day. It will soothen his throat and make him feel better.
Hope this information helps. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts.
Wishing your father a speedy recovery.
Regards,
