I am a 61 year old woman who was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 10 years ago. I have tried most or all of the thyroid medications over the years but nothing controls the body swelling (water retention) and weight gain. Each endocrinologist has told me I'm taking the right dosage of thyroxine but nothing seems to work. I have a sensitivity to most of the preparations which causes skin problems and infammation. I can't budge my wait even if I live on carrots and celery. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated even if it's just a referral to an expert in the field.
Hello dear user If i was your treating doctor i will ask the thyroid tests (TSH, freeT3 and free T4) because i want to know your actual thyroid function under the actual dose of Thyroxine. If the tests results are in the normal range this means that the actual thyroxine dosage is right and you are in euthyroid state. In this case the thyroid is not the cause of fluid retention and weight gain.I will suggets more physical activity and a lot of patience because the problem of loosing weight sometimes is a complicated process. If the test results in hypothyroidism you can try with Armour thyroid that is a natural product made from animal thyroid glands (usually a pig's) and is used to treat underactive thyroid. You can discuss with your treating Doctor and decide together what is the best think to do for the treatement in the future. Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help. Best regards. Dr Elona
