Hello my son has not been feeling well at college for the past week. Fever and miserable. They did a rapid strep and mono test on Friday which came back negative. They sent it out and put him on a z pak. They emailed him this evening saying it did grow strep but not the most common type A . They also said he did not need to take the full five days of the zpack and to get a new toothbrush and wash his retainer with soap and water. He also said he was blowing out a lot of blood as well as coughing it up this weekend. He still says he feels kind of weak as well. Should I call the school and inquire what type of strep it is?
Hello Thanks for the query to HCM Forum. As there is blood with cough ( expectoration ) so get in sputum ( blood stained / examination for culture for exact nature of bacteria responsible for such infection . It may be streptococcus infection but may be another bacteria . Usually in such type of cases I prescribe amoxycycline+ clauvalanic acid capsules twice in a day. Sometimes I like to prescribe LEVOFLOXACIN 750 mg once a day for five days ( orally ) . Local antiseptic solution also provide relief in throat infection. In this type of cases consult an E N T expert as blood also present . Good luck.
