Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am ashamed of my teeth. I have lost 3 central bottom and top teeth. It's late now but I brush and floss and use mouthwash now daily. I have 4 old fillings. One root canal. I am a smoker and my problem is that I am terrorized having my teeth cleaned. They are sensitive The last time I went the dentist had to use local anestic too clean my teeth. My question is there a new method laser for the plaque and smoke stains. I am so scared that I can't go and get them cleaned. Is there a new method?? And my bottom front tooth is sticking out of the gum and it burns constantly. It's not a toothache. I am at the point where I can t handle the burning sensation anymore. And I also have one brown spot on my bottom gum. I was on Zyprex for 3 years. And now I am taking Effexor for the panic attacks. I don t want to loose my teeth but the fear of the dentist is greater. Iam 53 years old. What can I do???
I have gone through your query and can very well understand your health concern..
The first thing that I would like to tell you is that Smokers tend to have more severe gum diseases as there is a tendency in the gums of the smokers to show less amount of inflammation and symptoms as compared to the severity of the gum disease leading to more damage of the gums before they could become painful or inflamed enough to get treated..
Therefore you should immediately quit smoking as it can cause severe gum diseases as well as cause oral and lung cancers..
Lazers are used now a days for treatment of the gum problems but for cleaning the teeth to remove stains and plaque the traditional scaling technique is only employed.. In case if you find it painful you can ask your dentist and the dentist will use a numbing spray or gel over the gums so they they become numb and you get ease in getting teeth cleaned..
Brown spot on gums can be due to hyperpigmentation known as Smokers Melanosis and it is due to excessive melanin deposition.. Once you quit smoking the overall health of the gums will improve..
You should chew Vitamin C candies or lozenges as it helps in improving gum health..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora..
