Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi My friend just called to say he is in hospital awaiting surgery tomorrow for a hernia that is wrapped around his colon. 2 months ago he had a mini stroke and is on blood thinners which now not taking before the surgery He I 80 years of age What is to expected with this type of surgery
Age is not an important criterion. The benefit and risk of this surgery is very important. As you have told, If the surgery is not conducted, risk of colon getting trapped/wrapped could happen. A detailed evaluation needs to be done and I expect it to be done before any surgery. Blood thinners will increase the risk of bleeding and needs to be stopped before any surgery and so has been advised. If you need to know about the risk, all I can say is "Elderly patients who are otherwise well and have a high degree of function have an operative risk that is nearly as lower as younger age groups, when surgery is non-emergent"
Hope i have answered your query. If you have any further doubts, happy to help
