Suggest Prognosis Of CHF Stage 4, Enlarged Heart With A Hole
Hi,
My dad has CHF. He has been hospitalized 4 times this year. Once because he collapsed from fluid retention and fluid was built up in his lungs. He suffers from fluid retention, fatigue, & nausea. The doctors say that his heart is only working at 25%, its enlarged, he has a hole in his heart, and it doesn't pump, it only vibrates. He's not taking his medications like he should and not following his diet plan. My mom is a wreck because she's worried and she herself is now on high blood pressure medication because of the worry. She and I would both like to know how much longer he may have in this condition. She's afraid to ask. He is in Stage 4 of CHF. Can you give an opinion of a time frame, please?

I understand your concern, and unfortunately would explain that facing your dad's poor compliance to therapy and recommended diet, seems that he has not a long life expectancy, if he keeps going that way.
A stage 4 CHF not properly managed portends a very ominous prognosis. You need to discuss with your father and encourage him to be more compatible with CHF therapy.
An appropriate medical treatment may reduce significantly hospitalizations, improve life quality, and prolong patient prognosis. This is the only way to deal with a CHF patient.
