Suggest Remedies For Heartburn, Acid Reflux And Hoarse Voice

I am on prescription strength prevacid twice a day. I have been experiencing heartburn and acid reflux for over 3 days constant now. OTC meds aren t helping. I drank water with baking soda several times and that has not helped either. I am now coughing and my voice is hoarse. What do I do?

Hello.

You are currently on the right initial medication for reflux. However, since your symptoms have worsened, we need to look at the next course of action.

You can follow the following steps.
1. Small frequent meals.
2. Avoid lying down immediately after a heavy meal.
3. Continue taking prevacid for 1 more week.
4. Antacids like Gelusil or Gaviscon 10ml at night time. These are available over the counter in most countries. Baking soda with water does provide fast relief.
5. Avoid spicy food.

Inspite of all the aove measures if you still have sever reflux, I would suggest an endoscopy if possible to rule out the exact cause of the reflux. Many times a small hiatus hernia, which otherwise would not cause symptoms, may be the underlying cause of reflux. A course of antibiotics against Helicobacter pylori may also be needed, if found positive on biopsy or on urea breath test.

Hope this helps. Wishing you good health.

Regards,
Dr Geeta
