i am diagnosed with DVT rt popliteal artery 15 days ago.started with inj.clexane and tab.acitrom 4mg od.i stopped inj.clexane after 3 days and did INR today.its 4.7 and previous was 1.8....should i adjust the dose?what r the complications and for how many days should i take medicine?
Hi, you will need to continue the Acitrom for six months. The INR needs to be kept between 2 and 3 at all times. I usually advice my patients to measure INR every two weeks and keep it between 2 and 3. It should ideally not be less than 2 or more than 3. If it is more than 4 then you should stop the medication and start it after 3 days at a lower dose and get INR done 4 t 5 days later to see what INR level has been achieved. Fluctuations in INR level are expected and will happen. Dont worry about them. Just keep INR less than 3 as Popliteal vein DVT is not very likely to cause PE therefore you dont need much anti coagulation. Take care, Dr Rishi, New Delhi, India.
