Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a burning pain in my neck (left side). I take etadolac for the inflamation & Tylenol & they seem to help but I dislike taking any drugs. I m 55, female & am in OK health considering I m overweight. This started about 14 days ago while working at the Oregon State Fair. I d been on my feet daily for 11 days sometimes 12-13 hrs. day. I also notice the pain worsens when I sit at the computer. The chiropracter saw me last wk & had trouble cracking my neck area. I felt good for a short while & then the burning returned. I even saw a massage therapist who seemed to help the pain a bit by working on the rt side of the neck. Chiropracter wants me to return for 2nd visit this wk. Not sure it ll help but I m pretty desparate for relief.
Musculoskeletal neck pain can be very painful and debilitating, I am sorry your are going through this, I know how patients suffer from this. I respect the fact that you are trying to avoid taking any medications. In general, for this type of muscle spasm and pain I also try to avoid overdoing the meds as well. Some conservative options are of course, moist heat directly to the area (I always tell patients to take an extra long shower with the hot water aimed directly at the area of pain while trying to flex and extend the neck slowly).
Topical menthol agents like Ben-Gay or Aspercreme also work very well to loosen the spastic muscles. The oral NSAID that your taking also works well but please be careful as this can irritate the stomach with prolonged use. I realize that you are trying to stay away from prescription medications and that is commendable, I do feel obliged to say that some mild muscle relaxants also would likely ease the pain as well. Just food for thought!
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
