Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been having perioral dermatitis for about 15 yrs now. Though it hasn't been constant, when it does flare up it is VERY VERY painful. My symptoms are extremely dry skin around my mouth, lips become split in the corners, severely swollen and severely inflamed, bumpy rash at top of mouth and left and right corners that extend to my chin. Nothing works to alleviate these symptoms leaving me skeptical of trying anything else. No topical steroids or injections have worked and antibiotics just give me yeast infections.... I'm at a loss please help me!!!!
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain the first thing that I would like to tell you should not use any topical steroids in case of you have PERIORAL DERMATITIS as it will further exaggerate the condition rather than relieving it.. As it is a recurring condition you may need a long term course of atleast 6 weeks of Oral antibiotics like Doxycycline and Oral retinoids like Isotretinoin.. Topical application of Erythromycin gel, Metronidazole gel,Pimecrolimus and Azelic acid topical agents can be advised.. Wash your face with simple water and avoid all kinds of skin cosmetics.. Do cool compresses and avoid excessive sun exposure..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
