Hi there, I was doubting that I got HIV infection during an exposure more than a month ago, what made me more afraid is that i developed mild fever, sneezing and mild rash as well. So I have been to sexual health clinic to do a rapid HIV test which showed NEGATIVE results. My concern is that the rapid test will detect any antibodies after the appearance of early symptoms? i.e. is the appearance of early symptoms an indication that the antibodies (that are detected by rapid test) had started fighting with the virus and the titre can be detected by the test now? Kindly advise.
HIV tests may show a false negative if you don't wait for at least 3 months after exposure. This will give your body time to make the antibodies that the test will detect. Nothing you do now will affect your status but make sure to engage in protected sexual activities.
