Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a gag reflex. I am also a person with chiari and my mom says every time I gag Its part of my chiari What can I do to prevent my gag reflexes? Also I have Tmj and my jaws grind during the day like my bottom teeth scrape my top teeth up and down constantly on its own and I cannot stop it or control it. What will help control that motion? Its so annoying.
I can understand your concern. The gag reflex, teeth grinding and not having control over TMJ stability seems like problems associated with muscle tone and nerve supplying the area which can be a part of Chiari malformation you have.
In case of teeth grinding, you can go to the dentist and ask to make teeth guard for you which is a plate made of plastic made under vacuum specially for your teeth. When you wear this bite guard over your teeth, your teeth grinding problem will not wear your teeth and you will feel less trauma and fatigue to TMJ and associated muscles.
In addition, you should see a neurologist for the gag reflex and problems associated with the nerve supply of the area. There are treatments available to treat or control Chiari malformation and problems associated with it.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
