Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter is 3 months old. She weighed 8lbs 3oz at birth (20 inches) & now she is just about 10lbs. (23 1/2 inches) She is happy & alert. She has plenty of wet diapers everyday & poops atleast once every couple days. She is hitting all of her developmental milestones. The Dr said her height and her head are growing properly, but she is underweight. I was told to stop breastfeeding completely and give her formula...if she is happy and hitting her milestones doesn't that mean she's growing properly? What would you do?
Hi...your doctor was right in telling that she is underweight. her height and weight are normal. You can follow up with the formula feeds your doctor has suggested but only one advice...DO NOT STOP BREAST FEEDING AT ANY COST. BREAT MILK HAS GOT MANY OTHER ADVANTAGES APART FROM WEIGHT GAIN WHCIH A FORMULA MILK CAN NEVER GIVE. I suggest you keep giving breast milk and supplement it with extra formula feeds too. Regards - Dr. Sumanth
