Hello,
the medical treatment for
gout attacks is
colchicine. If colchicine is contraindicated then non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory-drugs (NSAIDs) can be used. If the patient can't recover with the above measures then
prednisolone is the next step.
You can try anything else if you'd like but the mainstay of medical treatment are the aforementioned drugs.
Several days after the attack is gone, he should start using uric acid lowering drugs like allopourinol or others (depending on his medical history). Please remember that these drugs may precipitate a new attack, so taking colchicine is adviced. Your doctor should advice you about dosages and supervise your treatment, because some of these drugs may cause problems.
Smoking is actually related to lower uric acid levels but this is not a treatment for it. Loosing weight (if
overweight) is the good way to go. Abstaining from alcohol is essential. There are other diet options as well, but they are more important during the steady phase (outside the crisis that is).
I hope I've helped you understand the treatment of this disease better.
If you have more questions, I'll be glad to answer.
Kind Regards!
