Suggest Remedy For Non Healed 5th Metacarpal Post Being On A Cast

hey i got a boxers fracture. and it seems my 5th metacarpal hasn t healed properly. i just for my cast off and i saw the x ray images. it looked like the bones had overlapped on the pinky metacarpal. the doctor didnt say anything and said i had good range of movement after just getting my cast off. but i still cant make a fist because it seem my pinky is lowered too much. i figured the doctor would have said something had the bone needed to be rebroken. im going to call them tmro but was hoping to get some advice as to whether or not it would still heal properly in that case. it was a three week cast.

Hello,

If your fifth metacarpal bone has not healed properly, it is good idea to seek medical attention as soon as possible to prevent further damage or complications. In general, if the bones are not properly aligned, they may require a second reduction (re-breaking of the bone) to properly set them in place. However, the decision on whether to perform a second reduction depends on various factors, such as the degree of displacement and the amount of time since the initial injury.

You mentioned that you are going to call your doctor tomorrow, which is a good idea. They will likely recommend further imaging studies, such as a CT scan or an MRI, to assess the extent of the injury and determine the best course of treatment. In the meantime, you can try some self-care measures, such as immobilizing the affected hand using a splint or brace, avoiding activities that may worsen the pain, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.

It's essential to avoid putting too much stress on the injured area to allow it to heal properly. Overall, it's important to follow your doctor's advice and treatment plan carefully. With proper care and attention, most bone fractures can heal fully, even if the bones needed to be reset.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
