Hi,
1. Consult an orthopedic surgeon to differentiate whether it is non-infectious [treated with rest, ice, and simple pain medications] or infectious bursitis [treated with antibiotics, aspiration, and surgery].
2. Hip discomfort could be because of
hip osteoarthritis, AVN [avascular necrosis], DVT [deep vein thrombosis], PVD [peripheral vascular disorder], or simply because of cramps in the calf [due to diabetes, calcium/salt deficiency]
3. Rule out other causes like
tuberculosis, ask for Hb%, WBC, ESR, RA test, X-ray LS spine [for osteoarthritis,
osteoporosis,
disc prolapse, TB spine]
Till then:
- Apply any counter-irritant locally [
diclofenac gel]
- Fomentation with hot water bag
- Use of the walking stick, to reduce the load on the knees
- Avoid climbing stairs, sitting on the floor, as far as possible
- Use the western commode, instead of Indian style latrine
- Maintain straight back posture while standing or sitting
- Avoid bending forwards and lifting weights
- Sleep on a hard mattress
- Use a lumbosacral belt to support the spine
PS. SLR [straight leg raising test] and EHL [extensor hallucis longus] weakness must be tested in every case of backache.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
