General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, pain in rib cage may be of various concerns like:
- Costochondritis
- Pleura or chest wall irritation from underlying lung pathology
- Intercostal ligament pull or stretch
- Bacterial pneumonia
- Allergic conditions with intercostal retractions
Guidelines at present:
- Discuss need of an X-ray chest and pulmonary function test with your doctor
- Local application of heating pad
- Analgesic medications as tramadol hydrochloride or diclofenac after meals with antacid if no history of drug sensitivity
- Inhaled doses of long acting beta agonist or anti cholinergic medications will help for sure.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
