Suggest Remedy For Pain When Suffering From Bone Marrow Edema
My son is an 11 year-old and plays baseball. He had Little League Elbow last year and this past spring was diagnosed with mild bone marrow edema in the elbow. We have stopped pitching completely and he actually throws very little and has been playing mostly 2nd base. The pain was gone but recently when he has to throw hard or far ... More than 60%, it will hurt again. I ve read varying things and many say this can last years. He had a MRI this spring and the ligaments are fine... Just the mild bone edema. Is it a matter of dealing with pain until this goes away, and when should I expect the edema to go away in regards to an 11 year old?
Bone marrow edema can be diagnosed by MRI and is not usually seen in X-rays. Hope the diagnosis was established by doing that. Usually the condition is due to some kind of trauma or may also be due to osteoarthritis (which doesn't seem to be the case in your son as he is very young). It usually resolves on its own and generally doesn't need any treatment however if the condition is troubling you a lot and is not resolving then you may consider core decompression surgery. It is a major surgery. You can take normal pain killers like paracetamol or NSAIDS for getting rid of the pain.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
