Suggest Remedy For Painful Sunburns On Lower Legs

I was sunburned this weekend on my lower legs. I have never burned like this before. My legs are very swollen, I am 48 years old and the sunscreen I used worked on other areas, but not on my legs. After I get up in the morning, or from sitting too long and then stand, it is EXTREMELY painful. I have never had this type of pain before. help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
welcome to health care magic,

Acute sunburn can be very painful and discomforting. It heals with peeling/desquamation.
Desquamation is associated with discomfort, itching.

If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to take a short course of an oral steroids like methylprednisolone 32 mg once daily for a week OR Prednisolone 40 mg once daily for a week.
Oral steroids are rapidly effective and immediately bring down the discomfort/itching within 24-36 hours.

In addition to that you may also use topical moderately potent topical steroid e.g fluticasone propionate cream (Flutivate cream) twice daily or a few days.

An OTC oral antihistamimine e.g cetrizine would provide you symptomatic relief from itching.

Regards,
I find this answer helpful
