Suggest Remedy For Persistent Pain After Tooth Extraction

I had the #31 tooth extracted (cut out; one stitch) Thursday morning. The pain has not gotten any better. I am a smoker and have been reading about dry socket which I ve never had before and have had at least 3 other teeth pulled and smoked. My right side of my jaw is throbbing and gum is achy. My breath smells fine (cigarette smoke) and no bad taste in mouth (except from antibiotic and salt water). I have what looks like bruising in the back of my mouth where I was given 3 shots or maybe it was from one of the instruments but looks bruised. I ve looked at pictures of dry socket and where I had tooth extracted does not look like the pictures. There is still blood in the site. It s making my upper teeth above it hurt too. My cheek is still puffy too. I am taking Motrin, Tylenol, and Aleve. I can sleep fine and the over counter meds take the edge off. Does this sound like dry socket? I only had a half this tooth when they cut it out so thinking maybe just a bad tooth and could have had some infection in it even though I was on antibiotics 3 weeks before I had tooth removed. The dentist who removed it did not talk to me after and I didn t even know he cut it out until his assistant told me. He was very fast so I am thinking he was not careful and why I am in so much pain. Please help!

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can very well understand your concern..

As per your complain pain and a slight bleeding at the site of extraction is normal especially if the extraction is surgically done by bone cutting and stitches, there is more swelling and pain..
In case of Dry Socket pain begin after 5 to 6 days after the extraction and is not continuous immediately after extraction..

If you have continued pain you can either have any remaining tooth piece left in the socket causing infection and pain or it can also be due to response of inflammation which is commonly occurring after surgical procedure..

I would suggest you to consult your dentist and get clinically evaluated and get treated accordingly..
You can take Tramadol for severe pain in place of Aleve and Tylenol..

You can also take a short course of antibiotics like Amoxicillin 500mg thrice a day...

Hope you get well soon and thanks for writing to Healthcare Magic...

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query. Understanding your concern. As per your query persistent pain after tooth extraction is because of persistence of infection in extraction socket area. Either tooth was badly decayed or more force has been used while extracting tooth. You should not smoke till the time socket don't heal properly as it can leads to formation of dry socket. I would suggest you to visit dentist again and get x-ray done to check extent of healing. Go for eugenol dressing in socket area. Maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing gently. Take combination of Ibuprofen and Diclofenac. Do warm saline gargles. Rinse with betadine solution daily. It could be dry socket as you having persistent pain. Follow all the instructions, it will resolve in 4-5 days.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.
Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
