Suggest Remedy For Persistent Swelling, Stiffness And Numbness In Toe Post Fracture

I broke my third toe 9 weeks ago, and sought medical treatment. I was told to do buddy taping. After seeing my family doctor at week 6, he didn t think another X ray is necessary as I am healing ok. However, after I removed buddy taping, the foot was still a bit swollen from the other, and I have experienced the sensation of numbness and stiffness on the toe and surrounding area since then. When I moved the injured toe, I also felt tingling. Is it normal, and would that go away? I am a 40 year old woman.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms can be related to inflammation of the injured toe. The inflammation can press the nerve causing stiffness or numbness. In my opinion, an X-ray is always needed to exclude the fracture. Meanwhile, I suggest using anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen to relieve the inflammation. I also recommend to use cold compresses for local application.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
